The  island

of Skiathos

The island has a north to southwestern direction and is approx. 12km long and 6km wide. Situated north of Euboea and opposite the Pilion Mountain (Volos), Skiathos is part of the Northern Sporades group. The terrain, forested with olive- and pine-trees, is more rugged on the north coast, with the highest peak at 438m. Skiathos’ coastline is scattered with over 60, mostly sandy, beaches and is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations of the Aegean Sea. With its green and blue hues it attracts both the beach tourists and the hikers.

Mamma Mia (2008)

Gaining world recognition thanks to the movie Mamma Mia, Skiathos and its neighboring islands became famous tourism destinations.

While the Port from which the ships to Kalokairi (fictional Island in the movie) depart is located on Skiathos most of the other scenarios are being played on the islands Skopelos and Alonnisos where for example the wedding chapel can be found.

Daily boat tours from Skiathos are dedicated to movie fans and will show the most beautiful parts of all three islands.

Culture

Skiathos’ most famous author is Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911). Most of his literary work has been translated into English. His native home was turned into a museum, and Skiathos’ main street is named after him.

Hiking on the island

The German born Ortwin Widmann has written a fascinating book „Skiathos; Wandern im Paradies der Ägäis“, a guide (in German only) to 25 well signaled hiking tours of a total of 197 kilometers. He has been living on the island since 1997 and is a passionate hiker. During the season daily trips to the neighboring islands of Skopelos and Alonnisso are available. Mr. Widmann too offers interesting trips to these islands, e.g. to the rock church of Agios Giannis the wedding chapel of the movie Mamma Mia.

Transportation

The international airport of Skiathos is operating since 1972. In the high season from May to September there are daily flights from Athens and various European cities. From Volos, daily ferries and speedboats operate all year round. During the summer months there is a ferry- boat from Agios Konstantinos and a new connection from Euboea. The airport „Nea Anchialos“ near Volos is served by Ryanair, Austrian Airline, Germania and some other budget air lines during the main season.

On the island itself it is recommended to rent a car otherwise there is a Bus driving from Skiathos town to Coucounaries.

The beautiful Villa Thea is located on the island Skiathos which belongs to the Sporades group in the Aegean Sea.
